Our Visiting Artist Program

About Us

Pensarte employs a widely acclaimed teaching method called "Visual Thinking Strategies" or "VTS."

Through viewing art in peer-group settings with facilitated discussions, the VTS method advances literacy through looking. It begins by taking time to observe a work of art together. It asks for in-depth thinking, the articulation of ideas, sharing evidence of what one observes, and listening to others. The VTS method of engaging with art has proven to enhance visual literacy and to aid writing, reading, and language use in subjects of art and beyond, into literature, math, and the sciences.

More than 30 years in evolution VTS was created by Philip Yenawine, former Director of Education at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Dr. Abigail Housen, a Harvard University-trained educator and psychologist specializing in aesthetic development.

The professional visiting artists in the Pensarte program are trained in the VTS teaching method.
